独特の素敵な言葉で綴る、
ヴォーンさんの「TOKYO COFFEE BLOG」の第五弾！

今回はキャットストリートにある
「The Roastery by Nozy Coffee」。

何とオープンからの4日間で11回も訪れたという程、
気に入ってしまった模様。行き過ぎw

とにもかくにも今回もカフェ愛、ヒト愛に溢れる
素敵なBlogとなっています！

これまでブログに書いた他のカフェもそうだったけど
誰かに伝えないとおかしくなってしまいそうになる
もうカフェが身体の一部みたいになってるね
と妻によく言われる

オープンからの4日間で11回も行ってしまった
オリンピックの短距離選手ばりにダッシュして
家族よりもバリスタと会う回数の方が多かった
そう、そしてその4日間はあまり眠れず…
カフェインのせいだと思う？
正解
でも間違いでもある
いつもバタンキューだからね

彼女は街で一番若いカフェだ
三茶にお姉さんがいる
でも姉妹だとは思わないかも
彼女は街のど真ん中でキラキラしてるけど
お姉さんは穏やかにひっそりと佇んでる

The Roasteryのコーヒーマシーンは、
ほとんどノンストップで働いてるけど
やっぱりメルボルンのカフェとは少し違う
メルボルンではわざわざ列に並ぶのは
コーヒーを頼む時くらいのもの

というくらいにみんなコーヒー好きだから、
カフェはいつでも活気にあふれてるんだけど
それでも彼女は東京のカフェシーンに新しい風を吹き込んだ

彼女のせいで他のカフェがちょっとシャビーに見えてしまう
そのわけは…
　

1 –
僕はこのレイアウトにとても感心した
店の真ん中に島が作られていて
その中にレジとコーヒーマシーンがある
周りをゆっくり歩くのが楽しい
もし僕が子どもだったら
コーヒーを待つ間ぐるぐる走り回ってしまう
でも絶対目は回らないと思う

僕の「ベストレイアウト賞」
銀座のDover Street Market
渋谷のSupreme
今回キャットストリートのThe Roasteryが加わる

2 –
“The Roastery”という名前は
店の中の大きなロースターからきている
驚くほど大きい
柵で仕切られてるけど、手を伸ばせば届きそう
ほんと、ロケットみたい
もしくはロケットを飛ばす機械かなにか
周りではお客さんがコーヒーのスペシャリストと話し
色々教えてもらい
コーヒー豆を吟味する
また今度書くつもりだけど
僕はまだ豆を買ったことがない
でもこの店で何かが変わるかもしれない

3 –
僕は素敵なトースターをいくつもみたことがある
トースターが一つ、トースターとして機能している
だけど一度、友達の友達のうちの
ディナーパーティーで見たのは
壁にきれいに8列に並べられた
100個以上のトースター
それ以来トースターを見る目が変わった
(“toaster collection”でググってみて)

この店でバリスタとエスプレッソマシーン達を
トースターのようにあたためるのは
ビシッと2列に並んだ14個のインダストリアルライト
よく見ると他よりほんの少し明るいものもあったり
言葉にしようとしてもできないけど
この照明の下でコーヒーを飲めることにただ感謝する

最後にカフェに行かなかった日がいつだったか思い出せない
それくらいカフェが好きだ
それでもたまには嫌になってしまうようなカフェもある
その理由の1つが
ケーキやクッキーをディスプレーするキャビネット
どうなるかわからなかったのか
届いたのを見てみたら、、、
おいおい大きすぎる、となりがち
送り返すにも高くつくし
オーダーメードなんてできるはずもなく
スペースを占領してしまう

一方この店のディスプレー
2つのレジの間にあるんだけど、これが完璧
変な話だけど
何も食べなくても
キャビネット自体が僕に元気をくれる

みんなスマイル！
スマイル！スマイル！スマイル！
ハッピーになるには
歯を出して
アイコンタクトして
目尻を下げて
笑う！
僕はモデルをしている時は笑わない
もっと笑うべきかも知れないけど
ほら、クールでないとさ
でもコーヒーを飲む時
人と会う時
それは笑う時なんだ

この店を経営しているのは能城政隆さん
まだ26歳
SFC卒でさすがベンチャーマインドがある
でも彼の一番の魅力は最高の笑顔
みんなも笑顔になる！
NOZYは一日に輝きを与えてくれる

本題に戻り
コーヒータイム！
口に含み
ゆっくり飲み込む
喉の奥に流れていく
改めて、本当にいいものだ
豊かなコクと味わい
僕の心はどこか遠くに飛んで行ってしまう

ヴォーンはもともとは私の妻の友人の旦那…
と書くと何だか遠いようですが、
今は超ご近所さんでもあります。
彼の出身地メルボルンには私自身仕事でも
プライベートでも何かと縁があり、
訪れる度にいつかはここに住みたいと思っていました。

で、そこから今の奥さんを追っかけて(？)
日本に来たヴォーン。
笹塚の焼肉屋で小さい虫にびびって飛び回っていた姿、
フジロックの宿で会う人皆に”Love and Peace!!”と
ハイタッチしていた姿。よく覚えています。

やっぱメルボルンみたいなとこで育つと
こんな素直でフレンドリーな大人になれるんやな〜と
勝手に思っていましたが、
そのキャラクターでどんどん活動範囲を拡げていってますね。

仕事とTaoの世話とで忙しく、ご近所ながら
一緒に酒を飲んだリする機会があまりないんですが、
自分がナチュラルにやりたいことを楽しむことで
周りをどんどん引きつけていく姿を見て、
いつも刺激になっています。
いろいろオモロいこと、一緒にやっていこな、ヴォーン！

like with all cafés i’ve written about

i feel as though i have to tell someone

or i’ll burst

my wife often says –

“you get worked up as if the cafe is an extension of you”

in the first 4 days after opening, i went 11 times

i ran there like an olympic sprinter

i saw the baristas more than i did my family

yeah i didn’t sleep much those four days…

now you might be thinking it was because of the coffee

and you are right

but you are also wrong

cause i’m always out like a light

she is the youngest cafe in town

she has an older sister who lives in sangenjaya

you wouldn’t guess they’re siblings though

she’s classy and smack bang in town,

whereas her older sister is more subtle and hidden

The Roastery’s machines are going almost non stop

still not quite like cafés in melbourne

where the only thing you bother to line up for is coffee

nonetheless,

she has added something else to the tokyo coffee scene

this is why she’s made other cafés look a tad shabby now

1 –

the layout blew me away

the register and coffee machines are part of an island

in the middle of the cafe

i love walking slowly around the island

if I was a child

i’d run round and round while my coffee was being made

and i’m sure i wouldn’t get dizzy

my award for ‘best layout’ go to

dover street market in ginza

supreme in shibuya

and i can now add The Roastery on cat street to that list

2 –

it’s called The Roastery

because there’s one giant roaster

i marvel at the size

it’s fenced off but almost within arms reach

it seriously looks like a rocket

or a thing that could power a rocket

around here

customers chat with the coffee specialists

get educated

try and buy beans

i’ve never bought beans in my life

which is another story i’ll tell you one day

but this place could turn things around for me

3 –

i’ve seen many lonely toasters

just by themselves, doing what toasters do

but i once went to a dinner party

at a friend of a friend’s

and there

lined up on the wall

in about 8 neat rows

were more than a hundred toasters

i’ve never looked at toasters quite the same

(google “toaster collection” to get some idea)

keeping the baristas and their espresso machines warm n’ toasty

are 14 industrial lights, lined up at attention in pairs

some shining ever so slightly brighter than others

i won’t even try to put my feeling into words

i’m just really thankful to drink my coffee under them

4 –

i love cafés so much

that i can’t remember the last day i didn’t go to one

you can imagine i’ve developed some pet peeves

one of them

is the cake/pastry display cabinet

it’s like nobody thinks about how it will work

and suddenly when it arrives,

they go –

bloody hell that’s big

it’d be too expensive to send it back

or heavens forbid we get one order made
(note to translator-> hint of sarcasm)

and it takes over the whole place

the display in between the registers here is perfect

call me crazy, but

it’s as though the cabinet has actual power that recharges me

even though i’ve never eaten anything out of it

5 –

everybody smile!

smile smile smile!

be happy

show your pearly whites

make eye contact

soften those eyes

and smile!

normally when i model, i don’t smile

i probably should more often i know

but you know, i have to be cool

but when i have coffee time

and when i meet people

smile time

meet masataka nojo

the man in charge here

who is only 26 years young

he graduated from SFC

hence the entrepreneurship

but more than anything else

he has the world’s best smile

and it’s infectious!

nozy will brighten up your day

down to business

coffee time!

i hold the coffee in my mouth

and slowly swallow it

it goes down

deep in my throat

only now do i understand how good it really is

the coffee is rich and delicious

my mind is now someplace faraway
