今回は代官山のT-SITE内にあるカフェ「Anjin（アンジン）」。
ヴォーンさんはつい最近まで名前を「アイジン」だと勘違いしていたとか!?
その理由も納得の、今回も何ともヴォーンさんらしい言葉で綴られています！

今回ご紹介するカフェは、いつもとナニかが違う

まずはここのカフェ、コーヒーが一杯900円なのだ

一杯のコーヒーに900円の価値を見出せない人もいるかもしれない

—実は僕にとっても予算オーバーなのだけれどもー

最近はお昼のミーティングなんかで使わせてもらっている

そしてここでならば２倍の金額をだしてもいいと思っている

よし、それでは本題に入ろう。

きっと理解してくれる人もいると思うし、 理解をしてくれない人間もいるだろうが、僕は無類の「限定好き」である

もちろん、自分でもこれが悪い癖であるという認識はあるのだが

「限定」というコトバが身体に触れる度に、どうしても胸の鼓動が高鳴ってしまう

そして遂にはコントロールできない事態に陥る始末だ

ある時には村上春樹氏の1Q84の限定版に大金を叩いてしまい、あまりの額に離婚の危機に直面したことだってある

―あまり後悔はしていないのだが

そんな僕が胸躍る品々—

14万7千円の値がついた、サリンジャーの「ライ麦畑でつかまえて」の限定版や

94万5千円の値のつくロシアの建築家チェルニコフ氏の1933年発行版Architectural Fantasies

30年以上も前に発行された僕の好きなファッション雑誌のバックナンバーや

デザインと文化に関する雑誌など

―と遭遇してしまう度、これらの定期刊行物が販売用ではないということに僕は胸をなで下ろす

こんなにまでも僕の魂を震わすような品々を、他のどこで見つけることが出来るのだろうか

誰か教えてほしい

僕の言う「限定版」の数々を自分の目で確かめたいというアナタには是非

代官山にあるT-SITEに足を運んでいただきたい

東京のトレンドが凝縮した代官山の地に立つT-SITE

ここには世界の文化コンシェルジュたちが唸る書籍が集まっているのだ

ここで少し想像をしてみてほしい

素敵な出逢いを求め、アナタはT-SITEの

真ん中の建物に向かって歩く…

そしてアナタは二階へと向かって足を進める…

二階にあがると空気が変わる

アナタは、もう既に「カフェ–Anjinアンジン—」の空間に立っているのだ

そして、古今東西の書物とアートが織り出す空間にアナタは包まれ

カノジョの虜になっている自分にハッとする

ここ「アンジン」がいざなう空間こそが、まさに「限定品」そのものなのだ

僕がアンジンとの逢瀬を重ねる度

カノジョは「輝き」以上の「輝き」を解き放っている

（僕はほとんどの物に対して「輝き」を感じないが、ここには「輝き」そのものが四方八方にディスプレイされている）

そして「静けさ」を保ちつつも

（ひっそりと存在できていることが不思議なくらいだ）

「高貴さ」で満ちあふれている

（神々のための会員制クラブがあるのかと思ってしまうくらいだ）

カノジョに敵うものなんて存在しないとつくづく思い知らされる

カノジョの創りだす洗練されたその空間に、僕は今もなお魅了され続けている

…おや？

あれはもしかして、世界的にも有名な脚本家のバズ・ラーマン氏ではないのか？

（話しが反れてしまうが、このブログを執筆中に彼が店内に入ってくるのを目撃してしまったのだから仕方がない）

僕は「マイナー」に惹かれる場合が９割方の人間なので「大手」にはあまり目がいかない

そんな僕だが、T-SITEの裏に名高い建築家や、あのBlue Noteが関わっているという点を見ると

此処に巨額の建設費用がかかったことは容易に想像することができる

チェーン店でもなく、個人経営の店とも違う

かといって家族経営の店でもない

では一体、この場所をどう表現すればよいのだろうか

そんなことに思いを馳せながら、僕は強く思う

ココ以上の空間を人に提供できる場所は他に存在しないだろう

セカイジュウを探しても、だ

そう確信する

魂の底にまで染み渡る満足感を創りだすことは、アンジンにしか成せないワザなのだ

そんな魂震える空間でアタマの中を「空っぽ」にすること―

そんなことはゼッタイに不可能だと言っても過言ではないような気がする

日本人は、生まれ持った才能を「空間」として開花させる術を知っているのだ

最愛の妻との結婚式を思い出す

―クラスカホテルで式を挙げたのだが

選択肢が多く在るのにも関わらず、会場選びにそう時間は要さなかった

だが、もしもその当時から「アンジン」の存在を知っていたとしたら…

僕は間違いなく頭を抱えていたに違いない

いや、待てよ

そもそもアンジンで結婚式や披露宴をすることは可能なのだろうか

そう考えると、アンジンがカフェなのかどうかも、わからなくなってくる

ラウンジなのか？本屋なのか？はたまた音楽バーなのか？

グランドピアノが置いてあるということは、秘密の音楽会でも開かれるのだろうか？

それとも、アートギャラリーなのか。

アートで思い出したが、アンジンには絵画などの作品も展示されている

その中で、僕好みの絵画はアンジンへと繋がる階段を上がると見えてくるのだが

―え？僕の好みのタイプはどんなのモノかって？

遠くから眺めると惚れ惚れするが、近寄って改めて見てみるとナニかが違う

そして、思っていたモノとは別のモノであることに気づかされる−想像を覆されるような作品−それが、僕の好むアートのタイプだ

一年ほど前に会田誠氏の個展を訪れたのだが足を踏み入れるなり、素晴らしい壮大な山々が描かれた、息を飲むような作品が目に飛び込んで来た

僕はその作品の元へと足早に向かい、改めてもう一度よく見てみる

するとなんと、その山々はサラリーマンの死骸から成っていたのだ

その時に受けた「衝撃」ともとれる感情を、僕は今も未だハッキリと憶えている

そして、そのような感情を与えてくれるモノにはもう出逢えないだろう、とも思ったものである

これも、アンジンの空間に在る「僕好みのあの絵」と出逢うまでは、の話しなのだが

僕が出逢ってしまったその絵は、高さ2メートル×横幅10メートルもある 壁画なのだが、己を真正面から攻めてくるような力強さを秘めている

アンジンへと繋がる例の階段をのぼり、遠くからその壁画を眺めていると、情緒溢れる日本の伝統的な雰囲気にまず魅了される

そして近くまで歩み寄ると…バーン！圧巻の一言に尽きてしまう

壁画の近くに座るか、遠くから眺めるか

悩ましいところだが、僕は「その時の気分で」と決めている

いずれにせよ「同じ古い衣類を身にまとった新しい人」のような気分になるのだが、わかりにくい表現だろうか

話しは変わるが、僕の人生の分岐点となったのは、卒業間際の高校３年生の時だった

僕は監督生の選抜候補者として選ばれ、先生8人を前にして面接を受けたわけだが

僕は何故かその瞬間に「先生たち全員と握手をしよう」と思ったのである

そのままおとなしく面接室のイスに座っていれば良いものを、先生の名前を言いながら握手をし、それから着席するという大胆な行動に出たのだ

そんな発想に自分で驚き、先生の名前を言いながら握手をしている自分に感動さえした

しかし、ラストの先生を前にし

「おはようございますケンダル先生」

と握手を交わした僕に返って来たのは

先生たちのゴホゴホ、という咳と気まずい沈黙—

すると、フレイザー校長が僕に向けてこんな一言を言ったのだ

「ヴォーン君、彼の名前はケンダルではなくて…」

…ケンダルではなくて、名前は何だったろう？

ほら、また彼の名前をまた忘れている

僕が何を言いたかったのかというと

「アンジン」についてこんなにも熱く語っているのに、つい最近まで僕は名前を勘違いし「アイジン」だと思っていたのである

大人になった今もそこはナニも変わらない

アイジン…愛人…

僕にとって「カフェ–Anjinアンジン—」は「愛人」のような存在でもあるから、アイジンと間違って呼んでいたところであまり変わりはないのかもしれない

僕の妻も、それでいいよと言ってくれるはずだ

この「空間」というハコが生みだす不思議な魔力は

ワタシを魅了してやみません。

今回、翻訳というハコを通して出逢ったブログという空間。

そして、ブログというハコを通して出逢ったアンジンという空間。

感性光るアングルでモノを見つめ、私たちのココロを引き込むような文章でモノを語るヴォーン氏のブログは、ワタシを一瞬にして魅了しました。

このブログを翻訳するにあたり、「呼吸」にも似たその心地よいテンポとともに、気がつくと彼の創りだした「空間」にいる自分に何度も出逢うこともできました。

この素敵な「空間」にお邪魔できたことを、とても嬉しく思います。

ヴォーン氏が愛してやまない「アンジン」を訪れてみたい。

そう思うキモチはあるものの、もう既に出逢ってしまった気になっているワタシ。

代官山を訪れた際には、「再会」しに行くようなキモチでアンジンに会いにいこう。そう思っています。

this time i’m introducing a different type of cafe
it’s actually 900 yen to get your coffee here
you might think that coffee is not worth 900 yen
well personally i cant afford it
but this is where i have my midday meetings now
and i’d be willing to pay double
let’s begin!

some of you will know, others won’t
but i have some bad habits
here’s one for you
i’m one of the biggest suckers for almost anything limited edition
my pulse is uncontrollable
i once spent a fortune on a limited edition
1Q84 by Haruki Murakami
i kid you not
it was so expensive
that divorce papers were pending
i don’t regret it though
and so here we go again here
i take a stroll around
a limited edition of catcher in the rye
valued at 147,000yen
a 1933 edition of Chernikov’s Architectural Fantasies
valued at 945,000yen
i’m feeling giddy
also back issues of my favorite fashion, design and cultural magazines
dating back over 30 years….
question for you
is there anywhere else you can find these?
i breathe a sigh of relief for the periodicals are not for sale

Anjin herself is a limited edition

every time i see her
she’s more than brilliant
(i don’t see brilliance much…but it’s on display for you here)
and tranquil
(it’s hard to believe this place is so secret)
yet so majestic
(if there ever was a private members club for the gods…)
and so sophisticated…
(if vogue police existed in real life, the people here would have nothing to worry about)

you can’t beat Anjin

Baz Luhrmann has entered the building
well – there you go

to be honest,
i’m not usually a lover of big business
nine times out of ten i prefer the underdog
nevertheless from what i know
this place has a renowned architect firm behind it
the one and only Blue Note was also involved
i’d say it would’ve cost millions to set this place up
yes, it’s not a chain
although i couldn’t call it an independent setting either
and i wouldn’t call it family-like
but here goes
and it’s a big call…
but i challenge you
to find a better space..
in the whole. wide. world.
i challenge you
to try to feel absent minded here
i think it’s impossible
Anjin is a deeply satisfying experience

the Japanese clearly know how to design
one of their several genetic gifts

i remember my wedding now…
i got married with my darling wife at Claska Hotel
out of the many places we considered
it was the one that hit the spot
and the decision wasn’t so difficult in the end
but if we had known of Anjin…
it would’ve made deciding the venue a lot more difficult

actually i don’t know if they do weddings
now that i think about it…
is Anjin a ‘cafe’?
or a lounge?
or a shop?
or a music venue?
yes, there’s a grand piano
which fourplay used in their secret gig here
or is it a gallery?
yes, there’s some art here
one piece in particular that you’ll catch a glimpse of walking up the stairs
my favorite type

is
when you see something
and you think wow that’s beautiful
and then you get up close
and it backfires on you
it’s not what you expected
know what i mean?
that’s my favorite type!
an example
about a year ago, i went along to see Aida Makoto’s solo exhibition
walked in and saw this exquisite painting of a cluster of mountains
from afar, the mountains were so classic, almost scholarly
….
and then i got up close
and in fact
the mountains were made up of literally thousands of dead businessmen in suits
briefcases still in hand
gory, bloodied, without a doubt, tragically worked to the bone
talk about an unexpected shift in emotion
and i thought i’d never see anything like it again
until… Anjin
the thing that hits you straight away
is this enormous illuminated mural
ten meters wide x two meters tall
so japanese, so traditional, so classical
and then you get up close
and BOOM!
sometimes i like to sit up close
sometimes i like to sit at the far end
it depends on how i’m feeling

but either way, i feel like a new man
with the same old habits..

a turnining point in my life
i entered the final year of high school
i was shortlisted as a possible prefect
we all were interviewed by a panel of 8 teachers
and when i entered
on the spur of the moment
i decided to shake everyone’s hand
and to greet each teacher as well as say their name…
as opposed to just walking in and taking a seat
yeah, i surprised myself. i impressed myself.
until i came to the last teacher
and said as confident as ever
“morning Mr Kendall, it’s good to see you sir”…
awkward coughs…
weird silence…
and then, the principal Mr Fraser said:
“ahh, Vaughan, that’s not Mr Kendall, that’s…”
oh bloody hell, i’ve forgotten his name again
anyhow, the point of the story –
(yes, confession time again)
for more than a year, since just the other day
i thought this place was Aijin {lover/sweetheart}, not Anjin
…
but it should be Aijin
i’ve always considered Anjin my Aijin
and i think my wife is okay with that
