Coffee Break
Vaughan’s TOKYO COFFEE BLOG Vol.3 -Shouan Bunko-

translator notes:

i was told it’s a little hideaway in nishiogikubo
ok, sounds like my type of place already – i’m off!
i find it, finally
followed the map on the site
some blocks seemed much longer than others
don’t know whether that was me, the blocks, or the cafe map
but either way – it’s a pretty cute map
my hopes peak, once again
happens every time
…wow
it looks so Japanese
but it looks closed?
look in
oh no, it is closed
i examine everything from the front
slowly
it’s an old house
a very old house
i’d say at least 50 years
and i peer in through the windows –
wow.. looks so lovely n’ cosy inside
some bread there, a separate shop even?
and i can see beyond the little bakery
beautiful furniture
and rounded windowed doors
and…
a tree; low and wide
looks like a tsutsuji?
but like one i’ve never seen
a single majestic tree in the middle of the greenest grass
the little prince and ghibli come to mind
this place is so offbeat
and i’m already in love
stepping stones round to a door
yes, theres no mistaking it
it’s closed – i see the sign now
the door is old
and the knob is small
i decide to try to open it
why are you doing this Vaughan?
a light door
i hope this knob doesn’t come off
the bottom half of the door opens but the top half stays put
weird
is this place really going to serve me an espresso?
hmm..
one more go
it opens
a traditional Japanese entrance
slippers ready to wear
i can smell Japan
very old, but good old Japan
i give the place a once-over
and then the man appears
who has the same hair as me
“teikyubi”
i blush
it doesn’t take much for me to blush
“holiday?”
“yes.”
and that’s it
door closed
teikyubis can be so frustrating
especially when you’ve made an effort
especially in the tokyo summer
but surprisingly i’m not upset at all
the man invited me in
said that he’d make me whatever i wanted
we became best friends almost without saying a word
and we ended up finding out we were related
he made me coffee after coffee
and we sat together under that tree
yeah it was a pretty cool dream that night
the following day i head to nishi ogikubo again
and go out the wrong exit and am completely bloody lost
you see
both exits look the same
but i find it again, finally
here i am again
door is already open
and i take off my shoes
look around and take it all in
mysterious though it is here,
that unmistakable Japanese stillness lies over this place
i enjoy my cafe latte outside
sitting on the japanese porch
cross legged
writing this
the man tells me to be aware of the mosquitos
i don’t care about the mosquitos
and i surprise myself
because i normally hate the outdoors
i’m an indoors type of guy
cafes, museums, live music
i just have to have my coffee outside here
in the sun
looking at this tree
and this grass
and the most amazing kataita-glass
how can I put it?
this place has a real calming effect
yeah, that’s it
i can honestly say
this is actually exactly the place I’ve been looking for my whole life
i can barely believe that it’s really real
i’ve put in my application to live there
for those of you who like numbers
i find out the house is 80 years old
and the tree was planted 100 years ago
right here
and my coffees are perfect
